India has successfully launched its first Earth-imaging satellite designed to operate from geosynchronous orbit, providing the country with significantly more persistent observation capabilities for disaster management, agriculture and national security.
The Earth Observation Satellite-05 (EOS-05) lifted off aboard the Indian Space Research Organisation’s GSLV-F17 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 2:55am on Friday. The 2,367kg spacecraft was placed into its transfer orbit approximately 18 minutes after launch.
Unlike conventional Earth-observation satellites operating in lower orbits, which must repeatedly circle the planet before passing over the same location again, EOS-05 is designed to maintain prolonged coverage of a broad geographical region.
ISRO chairman V. Narayanan said the spacecraft would provide “persistent monitoring of [the] Indian region,” with a steerable imaging system capable of focusing on selected locations.

“It is continuously monitoring. You can even take spot photographs,” Narayanan said.
The satellite substantially reduces the time between observations of strategically important areas. Retired Indian Army Lieutenant General Arun Sahni described the capability as an around-the-clock “eye in the sky” that could give authorities more time to respond to emerging threats.
“I don’t have to wait for a revisit,” Sahni said.
The technology could have particular significance along India’s sensitive borders with China and Pakistan. Sahni said frequent imagery could reveal changes in terrain, infrastructure, resources and troop concentrations, potentially providing military commanders with earlier warning of developments on the ground.
Beyond defence applications, EOS-05 is expected to strengthen India’s ability to monitor rapidly evolving natural disasters, including cyclones, floods and forest fires. Its imagery can also support weather forecasting, agricultural management and the monitoring of natural resources.
The satellite is the heaviest payload yet carried by India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle into a transfer orbit.
Friday’s mission marked the GSLV’s 19th flight and ISRO’s first successful orbital launch of the year, following the failure of the PSLV-C62 mission in January due to an anomaly involving the rocket’s third stage.
The achievement also follows an unsuccessful attempt in 2021 to deploy a geosynchronous Earth-observation spacecraft, when a malfunction involving the GSLV’s cryogenic upper stage prevented the satellite from reaching its intended orbit.
