A 28-year-old man has been charged after attempting to flee police custody by opening a plane’s emergency exit door during takeoff at Auckland Airport.
The man jumped from the door, landing on the tarmac and injuring himself.
Court documents reveal he is accused of interfering with the aircraft on a Qatar Airways flight, a charge under the Civil Aviation Act that could result in up to one year of imprisonment. He was scheduled to appear in the Manukau District Court today.
