35 dead as car plows into crowd in Southern China

A deadly incident in Zhuhai, Guangdong province has left 35 people dead and 43 injured when a vehicle rammed into a crowd of pedestrians near the Zhuhai Sports Centre.

The tragedy unfolded on Monday evening as members of fitness walking groups were gathered on an outdoor track. The driver, a 62-year-old man, fled the scene but was later detained by police, though his motives remain unknown.

Among the injured were elderly individuals and children, with many victims transported to four local hospitals for urgent care.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes, with footage capturing wounded people in sports attire on the track, while bystanders shouted “terrorist” in alarm.

This incident occurred just one day before the China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition 2024, set to take place in Zhuhai.
