At least 56 Palestinians, including 38 seeking food, were killed by Israeli forces across Gaza on Monday, primarily near controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) distribution points in Rafah.
UN human rights chief Volker Turk condemned Israel’s methods, saying they inflict “horrifying, unconscionable suffering” and urged impartial investigations into the killings.
GHF, backed by Israel and the U.S., has been criticised as a “human slaughterhouse” amid mounting death tolls near its tightly controlled aid hubs.
With over 300 dead and 2,000 wounded at GHF sites since late May, critics accuse Israel of weaponising food and maintaining a de facto blockade that leaves Palestinians starving or risking death for aid.
In response to the accusations, Israeli officials defended their military actions, stating that operations near aid distribution points targeted militants who were allegedly using the crowds as cover.
The Israeli military claimed it had taken precautions to avoid civilian harm and accused Hamas of exploiting humanitarian zones to stage attacks. Officials also dismissed criticism of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, arguing it provides a necessary channel for aid in a conflict zone where Hamas has obstructed international relief efforts. Israel rejected Turk’s remarks as biased and politically motivated, insisting its actions are lawful and directed at neutralising threats.
