UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has moved digital ID policy, telecoms, broadcasting, social media, online safety, mis- and disinformation work into a single expanded Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
The Government says the expanded Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport will have “coherent and strategic oversight” across telecoms, media and online safety, with changes taking effect immediately.
The functions have been moved from the science and technology department, which Burnham abolished three and a half years after its creation, despite warnings from the technology sector. Its science and innovation work has been shifted to the business department.
Days earlier, Burnham cancelled Britain’s national digital ID scheme, redirecting savings to cut electricity bills. The scheme is gone, but digital ID policy now sits with the online safety and disinformation team. Read more at Gov.uk, Global Government Forum and Global Government Finance.
