Canadian deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland has announced she will leave parliament to take up ‘an unpaid position’ as an economic development adviser to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
Freeland said she will resign her Toronto seat in the coming weeks and step down from her role as Canada’s special representative for Ukraine’s reconstruction. Zelensky confirmed the appointment, citing her experience in economic reform and attracting investment.
First elected in 2013, Freeland served in senior cabinet roles including finance, foreign affairs and international trade, and played a central role in renegotiating the North American free trade agreement. She broke publicly with former prime minister Justin Trudeau in late 2024 and later said she would not contest the next federal election. From July, she is also due to become chief executive of the UK-based Rhodes Trust.
Ukrainian Nazi roots
Freeland’s maternal grandfather, Mykhailo Chomiak, served as editor of Krakivski Visti (Krakow News), a Ukrainian-language newspaper published in Nazi-occupied Krakow (and later Vienna) from 1940 to 1945. The newspaper operated under direct Nazi supervision, used printing presses seized from a Jewish owner, and published antisemitic articles, pro-Nazi propaganda, and content celebrating Hitler while promoting virulent antisemitism.
Is there enough cocaine in Ukraine for both of them, not to mention the EU “leaders” who drop by from time to time?
