Australians who fail to complete this year’s Census are being threatened with daily fines.
The 2026 survey takes place on 11 August and introduces questions on sex recorded at birth, gender and sexual orientation for people aged 16+.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics said the data will help improve health and community services. The questions were added after the Government faced criticism from LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, Labor MPs and others, who argued the omission would leave such communities invisible in public data.
However, the Australian Privacy Foundation argued governments should earn public trust through stronger privacy protections, rather than relying on compulsory participation and penalties. Read more at Nine News, News.com.au and Australian Privacy Foundation.

Under the UN Human Rights Treaty, Part 1, Item 1.1, we see that New Zealand agreed in 1978 to be legally bound by the ICCPR Articles 12 and 17.
Under Article 17, items 1 & 2 addresses the bound agreement that ‘No one shall be subjected to arbitrary or unlawful interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, etc. & ‘in reflection, the scope of Article 17 protects privacy, but also from interference with the individual’s family and home life, written affairs, and personal identity and standing.’
The causal effect of this is that the Stats NZ ‘survey’ is that it is actually an audit, and an intrusive one which we believe conflicts with UN Articles that protect us.
