French first lady Brigitte Macron is facing a legal complaint after a video emerged showing her describing feminist protesters as “stupid b***ches” at a Paris theatre.
Several feminist organisations confirmed they had lodged a complaint alleging public insult, saying the remark caused offence to hundreds of women and advocacy groups.
The incident followed protests that disrupted a stand-up performance by actor and comedian Ary Abittan, who had previously faced a rape accusation that was later dropped due to insufficient evidence.
A backstage video, since removed from social media, showed Macron speaking with Abittan ahead of his show and referring to protesters in crude terms while attempting to reassure him.
The Élysée Palace said the comment was made privately and was intended as criticism of disruptive protest tactics rather than feminists more broadly. Nevertheless, the remark prompted swift backlash from activists, politicians and cultural figures. Macron later issued an apology, acknowledging the language used was inappropriate.
Legal experts note the case may hinge on whether a private comment later leaked online meets France’s legal threshold for a public insult, as the president’s spouse does not enjoy legal immunity.
