The ‘virus’, which researchers claim has devastated seabird and seal populations worldwide, would mark Australia’s first detection if confirmed when test samples return in mid-November.
While experts say the discovery would not significantly raise the risk to mainland Australia, the World Health Organisation warns that the zoonotic virus could spread to “wild birds, poultry, and dairy cattle”. The federal government has invested over $100 million to “bolster preparedness” against a possible outbreak.
