Decline in legacy media consumption in the US continues

In recent years, the United States has witnessed a significant decline in the number of people accessing mainstream media online.

Factors such as growing distrust in traditional media outlets, perceived biases, and the rise of alternative sources of news have contributed to this trend.

According to recent surveys, a sizable portion of the American population now seeks information from social media platforms, independent blogs, and niche news websites. The accessibility of these alternative sources, combined with their often unfiltered and direct approach, has attracted readers who feel disenfranchised by the mainstream media’s propaganda and ‘narrative.’

In response to this shift an increasing number of journalists have begun to establish their own websites and platforms to engage directly with their audience. This move allows journalists greater editorial freedom and the ability to cover topics that might be overlooked or underrepresented by larger media corporations.

Platforms such as Substack and Patreon have become popular choices for journalists seeking to monetise their work independently, fostering a more direct relationship with their readers. This trend reflects a broader shift towards personalisation and niche content in the media landscape, where audiences are willing to support journalists they trust and resonate with.

Former Big Tech executive Lulu Cheng Meservey, founder of ROSTRA, highlighted the downward trend of readers for mainstream media with a stark summary: traditional media traffic is collapsing. Statistics show that major legacy outlets from the LA Times to CNN have lost between 8 and 30% of their audiences since in the year to May 2024 as the industry faces bleak conditions with underpaid writers and looming layoffs.

  1. It’s no surprise The Atlantic and LA Times are among the worst as they are the wokest of the woke. Go woke go broke

  2. CNN used to be my “go to” channel in the early 1990’s when I had my first (analog) cable set-top box. CNN was international and center politics rather than BBC which was (and arguably still is) hard-left and Fox which was (and is) very US centric.

In 2015 when President Trump and Hilary Clinton were campaigning for the 2016 election, the usual adverts were on CNN. They show CNN footage on a wide screen TV as someone walks into a hotel: “Get CNN in such-and-such a hotel”. The problem was, they did not use the usual stock footage and instead ALWAYS showed Hilary Clinton campaigning and NEVER Donald Trump. Complete and obvious bias.

After that I stopped watching CNN.

  3. Six people control 96% of the American media and they are all Jewish, if you don’t believe me search it on Yandex but ignore Google as they own that as well and its only good for maps these days.
