Singapore has recorded a sharp rise in cancer diagnoses among younger people, with 4,995 cases in those under 40 between 2019 and 2023—an increase of 34 per cent compared with 2003 to 2007, according to the Singapore Cancer Registry.
Long-term data show early-onset colorectal cancer incidence nearly doubled from around five per 100,000 in 1968 to about nine per 100,000 in 2019, while breast cancer remains the most common cancer among younger women, particularly those in their 30s and 40s.
Clinicians report that cancer incidence is rising faster in younger age groups than in older adults, reflecting a global trend in which people under 50 are the only group with sustained increases since the mid-1990s.
Baffled experts say the rise cannot be explained by improved detection alone, noting higher mortality in some early-onset cancers due to later-stage diagnosis, and point to factors such as obesity, sedentary lifestyles, ultra-processed diets, and broader environmental exposures as likely contributors.
