Fire breaks out at new Indian oil refinery

A fire at the HPCL Rajasthan Refinery in Balotra district was likely triggered by a hydrocarbon leak in a heat exchanger circuit, according to preliminary reports.

The blaze broke out near the crude distillation unit, a critical part of the refinery where crude oil is first processed. Early indications suggest the leak occurred through a valve or flange, allowing flammable material to ignite.

Emergency response teams quickly contained the fire and isolated key units, including the crude and vacuum distillation systems, preventing the spread to other sections.

Indian authorities confirmed the incident was localised and caused no injuries or structural damage. Investigators are now examining the precise failure point and contributing factors, with both internal and external experts involved. The incident is the latest in a series of refinery fires around the world.

The incident forced authorities to delay the refinery’s official inauguration, which had been scheduled to be led by Narendra Modi on Tuesday (local time). Officials said a new date will be announced once investigations into the fire are completed and safety is assured.
