Four instructors from Iowa’s Cornell College were hospitalised after being stabbed by an unknown assailant during a visit to a public park in Jilin, China.

The incident occurred while the tutors were visiting a local temple as part of a daytime excursion. Among the injured was David Zabner, the brother of Iowa Representative Adam Zabner, who described the attack as a stabbing. David Zabner sustained an arm injury and is currently recovering in the hospital. The group, accompanied by a member of Beihua University, was in China teaching as part of a partnership with a local university.

The US State Department acknowledged reports of the stabbing but provided no further details. Images of the aftermath, showing at least three individuals bleeding on the ground, were briefly circulated on social media before being censored.

The incident has not been widely reported in Chinese state media, and online discussions have been limited, said a report in UK state media outlet BBC.

This attack comes amid ongoing efforts by China and the US to re-establish people-to-people exchanges, with Chinese President Xi Jinping planning to invite 50,000 young Americans to China over the next five years. However, tensions remain, partly due to a US State Department travel advisory discouraging Americans from visiting China.
