Greek anti-NATO protesters block weapons convoy bound for Kiev

Greek activists have staged a demonstration against NATO’s military support for Ukraine, blocking a convoy of trucks carrying weapons destined for the Ukrainian army.

The protest, organised by members of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and its youth wing (KNE), took place in the town of Tyrnavos in Thessaly on Wednesday.

According to local media dozens of protesters blocked a highway to intercept six trucks reportedly carrying missiles and ammunition from a Greek army base to Ukraine.

The trucks bore license plates from Ukraine, Poland, and Bulgaria, and were halted before being forced to take an alternate route.

During the demonstration, protesters waved flags, displayed banners, and voiced their disapproval of NATO and the Greek government’s involvement in the conflict.

Protesters, joined by local residents and the mayor of Tyrnavos, Stelios Tsikritsi, marched through the town after the convoy was redirected. They criticised the Greek government for its support of NATO and for allegedly “dragging the country into an unjust US-NATO-EU imperialist war.”

KKE MEP Vasilis Metaxas condemned the government’s actions, claiming it was “emptying Greek camps of ammunition” to serve foreign interests. Mayor Tsikritsi echoed these concerns, declaring the town’s refusal to let “the cargo of death” pass through and pledging opposition to further Greek involvement in the conflict.

Greece has pledged support for Ukraine, recently signing a security agreement with Kiev to train Ukrainian pilots for U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets, a move that has drawn criticism from Russia, which warns that such aid will only prolong the conflict.
