More than 400 illegal migrants crossed the English Channel on Sunday, only hours after two women died when an overcrowded boat ran into trouble off the French coast near Boulogne.
Authorities said the incident happened around 3am as large numbers of people attempted to board a so-called “taxi boat” heading for Britain.
Despite the tragedy, crossings continued throughout the morning according to GB News, with several dinghies intercepted and brought into Dover Harbour. The latest arrivals follow another busy day on Saturday when more than 360 migrants reached the UK, pushing the three-day total close to 800.
Maritime sources said smuggling networks are increasingly launching boats from a wider stretch of coastline, including areas deep into Belgium and south of the Somme, in an apparent attempt to avoid French patrols.
The renewed surge comes shortly after Britain agreed to provide France with hundreds of millions of pounds in funding aimed at strengthening coastal enforcement and disrupting people-smuggling operations.
