Hungarian father beaten to death for refusing to sign forced conscription papers in Ukraine

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has lashed out at Ukraine over the death of an ethnic Hungarian man who was allegedly beaten to death after being forcibly conscripted into the Ukrainian army, calling the incident “unacceptable” and demanding justice.

“A Hungarian father of two was beaten to death during forced conscription in Ukraine,” Orbán posted on social media. “He was one of us – a Hungarian citizen, protected by our Constitution. This is unacceptable. We demand answers, justice, and an end to the war that made this possible.”

The victim, 45-year-old Jozsef Sebestyen, held dual Ukrainian-Hungarian citizenship and died in a psychiatric hospital on 8 July, weeks after being conscripted from his hometown of Berehove in western Ukraine. His family claims he was beaten with iron bars after refusing to sign conscription papers. “They took me to a forest with many other men and started beating me,” he reportedly told relatives before his death. “It hurt so much, I couldn’t move.”

Ukraine’s military has denied the allegations, stating that Sebestyen’s autopsy found no signs of physical injury. “We firmly reject any allegations of forced labour, inhuman treatment or human rights violations,” the army said in a statement, while expressing willingness to allow a “transparent investigation under Ukrainian law.”

But tensions between Budapest and Kiev are again boiling over. The Hungarian Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine’s ambassador over the incident, and Orbán continued his attacks, linking Sebestyen’s death to wider failures of the Ukrainian war effort and EU policy. “A bitter truth looms over Europe: the war in Ukraine can’t be won with weapons,” Orbán said in a second tweet. “Brussels keeps burning billions, but there’s no defeating a nuclear power on the battlefield.”

“How much longer will common sense be ignored?” he asked. “It’s time to abandon failed illusions and let diplomacy do what weapons cannot: deliver peace through negotiation.”

The tragedy has reignited debate over Ukraine’s conscription practices, particularly in Transcarpathia, home to a significant Hungarian minority. Human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubynets recently revealed that over 3,500 complaints of conscription-related abuse had been filed this year alone, and dozens of recruiters were facing criminal charges. Allegations persist of beatings, forced enlistment despite medical exemptions, and the targeting of government critics and journalists.

Orbán, who has long resisted deeper EU and NATO support for Ukraine, used Sebestyen’s death to renew his opposition to Ukrainian EU membership. “A country where this can happen cannot be a member of the EU,” he declared.

  1. Ukraine state are not collecting their battlefield dead because the will owe families of the fallen soldiers thousands in compensation. Kiev is financially broke.

Rather they are placing mines and trapping the bodies with explosives because the Russians collect the bodies and return them to Kiev for a proper burial.

Ironically the Russians are assisted by Ukrainian soldiers who voluntarily surrendered, who are now getting killed collecting dead. Kiev say they are trators anyway, a shameful response to justify their actions.

Who do you believe when they say: “We firmly reject any allegations of forced labour, inhuman treatment or human rights violations,”

Most dreadfull crimes against humanity. Beter not watch too often though if you want to keep your sanity.
        Animals have more ” humanity”

  2. Orban, one of the very few decent politicians.
Blackrock retreats from Ukraine, and that is at least the probable end of this war. Blackrock’s larry fink is a welcome guest at the most european endebted governments. Behind the scene dictating policies.
The EU was a great facilitator of debt by the way, as nation’s central banks have no say any more in their own monetary policies. The ECB decides for all and european individual nations are now easy targets for predators

  3. The New Zealand government are helping pay for this by providing money and resources to Kiev, out of the tax payers pocket. Pretty revolting stuff…….
