Israel becomes first country to recognise Somaliland as an independent state

Israel has become the first country to formally recognise Somaliland as an independent state, announcing plans to establish full diplomatic ties and expand cooperation in areas such as agriculture, health and technology.

Somaliland’s president hailed the move as historic and said the region would join the Abraham Accords, arguing it would boost peace, prosperity and international engagement.

The decision has been sharply criticised by Somalia, Egypt, Turkey and Djibouti, which warned that recognising breakaway regions undermines Somalia’s sovereignty and sets a dangerous international precedent.

Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has its own government, currency and security forces, has long sought international recognition.
