Kiev residents told to use cat litter for toilets

Kiev sewer and services pipes blocked

Residents in parts of Kiev are being urged to resort to makeshift toilet arrangements after widespread heating outages caused sewer systems to freeze, leaving many apartment buildings without functioning sanitation.

Maksim Bakhmatov, head of the capital’s Desnyansky district, warned that plunging temperatures have led to burst and blocked pipes, creating what he described as severe hygienic risks for residents who remain in affected areas.

City officials say thousands of buildings have been left without heating, with Mayor Vitaly Klitschko previously cautioning that the situation risks turning into a humanitarian crisis. Bakhmatov said restoring sewer systems in freezing conditions is extremely difficult, suggesting residents may need to temporarily use outdoor pits, plastic bags, or cat litter until temperatures rise.

He warned heating may not return before winter ends in some areas, and further infrastructure failures could force more residents to leave homes already strained by years of war damage, aging systems, and delayed upgrades. Meanwhile, political tensions continue between city and national leaders over responsibility for the crisis, as Moscow says it has temporarily paused strikes on Kyiv ahead of scheduled peace talks.
