Lebanon’s president condemns Israeli strikes as ceasefire efforts falter

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has sharply criticised Israel following a series of deadly airstrikes in southern Lebanon, accusing West Jerusalem of undermining international efforts to uphold a fragile ceasefire with Hezbollah.

At least two people, described by Israel as Hezbollah militants, were killed in an Israeli strike on Tuesday, with several other attacks reported across the region in recent days. An RT team on the ground documented widespread destruction, including a multi-storey building levelled in the industrial area of Ghaziyeh near Sidon, where emergency crews searched through debris and surrounding shops and buildings suffered heavy damage.

The Israel Defense Forces said its operations targeted Hezbollah and Hamas infrastructure, including weapons depots and workshops, and confirmed the killing of two alleged Hezbollah members in a separate strike near Kherbet Selem.

The UN has acknowledged the attacks, with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson confirming multiple Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon. Aoun said the timing of the assaults, just ahead of a scheduled meeting of an international committee overseeing the November 2024 ceasefire, suggested a deliberate attempt to derail diplomatic efforts.

Despite the US-brokered truce intended to end more than a year of cross-border fighting, UN officials say continued Israeli operations have killed at least 127 civilians, raising fresh concerns over the stability of the ceasefire and the risk of renewed escalation.
