French President Emmanuel Macron has publicly addressed and dismissed rumours claiming his wife Brigitte Macron was born a man.
According to a report in the UK Daily Mail, the French president said he was frustrated over the false information and fabricated scenarios that invade their privacy.
Macron was 15 years old when he started a relationship with his then 40-year-old married teacher and mother Brigitte Auziere. The two would later marry in 2007.
Speaking on International Women’s Day, Macron highlighted how these transgender claims are emblematic of the ‘misogynistic online attacks’ women face daily.
Interest in the long-standing theory resurfaced recently after Macron’s step-daughter Tiphaine Auzière told Paris Match of her dismay over such rumours circulating on social networks.
The claims were initially investigated by a clairvoyant named Amandine Roy and feelance journalist Natacha Rey in a viral YouTube video in December 2021. YouTube has since removed the video.
The two suggested Brigitte was originally a boy named Jean-Michel Trogneux, which is actually the name of Brigitte’s brother. Both women faced legal action for libel, resulting in reduced fines upon appeal.
The accusations and legal proceedings have sparked debate in France about privacy, freedom of expression, and the lengths to which public figures are protected or attacked within the realm of online and media discourse.
Frédéric Pichon, Rey’s defence barrister, said her investigation about Ms Macron had been ‘carried out in good faith’ and in line with Article 10 of the European Court of Human Rights, which guarantees the right to freedom of expression.
He expressed outrage that his client was ‘placed in police custody twice during the case’, saying: ‘I am shocked by the disproportionate means deployed by the authorities to silence her.’
