Lord Mandelson has said he never saw girls at Jeffrey Epstein’s properties and declined to apologise directly for maintaining a friendship with the disgraced financier, insisting he was unaware of Epstein’s sexual crimes and not culpable.
In his first interview since being removed as UK ambassador to the U.S., Mandelson said he believed he was deliberately kept separate from Epstein’s sexual activities, suggesting his gay sexuality may have played a role, and claimed the only people he encountered at Epstein’s homes were staff.
Speaking to British state media that victims were failed by the system but said he would only apologise if he had known or been complicit. Mandelson was dismissed after emails emerged showing supportive messages sent to Epstein following his 2008 conviction, which Downing Street said revealed a deeper relationship than previously understood.
Senior Labour figures criticised his conduct as ‘naïve’, while Mandelson said he accepted his sacking and was moving on.
