In a decisive election victory the Mauritius’ opposition coalition ‘Alliance for Change’, led by Navin Ramgoolam won all parliamentary seats in the recent elections, marking a “huge defeat” for the ruling party, L’Alliance Lepep, led by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth.
Ramgoolam’s coalition swept all 62 elected seats in the National Assembly, signaling overwhelming support from Mauritian voters.
The historic win comes amid public discontent over rising living costs, with Ramgoolam pledging to address economic issues by increasing pensions, reducing fuel costs, and providing free transportation and internet access.
Jugnauth, who has led Mauritius since 2017, conceded defeat acknowledging that the population had “decided to choose another team.”
His administration had recently been embroiled in a corruption scandal following leaked recordings of political figures, which likely influenced voter sentiment.
International leaders, including India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, extended their congratulations to Ramgoolam, who will return to office after previously serving as prime minister twice. A high voter turnout of 79% further reflected the public’s demand for change.
