Mexican protesters torch government palace after mayor’s assassination

Violent protests erupted in Morelia, the capital of Mexico’s Michoacán state, after Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo was shot dead during Day of the Dead celebrations.

Hundreds of demonstrators stormed the Government Palace, hurling Molotov cocktails and setting fires as they demanded justice and the resignation of Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla. Police responded with tear gas and made several arrests.

Manzo, a high-profile independent mayor known for his tough stance against drug cartels, was killed despite being under police protection.

His assassination has intensified outrage over escalating attacks on local officials, with more than 30 politicians murdered ahead of Mexico’s 2024 elections.
