Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Australian leader Anthony Albanese of “betraying Israel” and abandoning the Jewish community after Canberra barred far-right Israeli politician Simcha Rothman from entering the country and formally recognised a Palestinian state.
In retaliation, Israel revoked visas for Australian envoys to the Palestinian Authority, with Netanyahu branding Albanese “a weak politician.”
Australian Immigration Minister Tony Burke dismissed the criticism, saying Netanyahu was “lashing out” and stressing that Australia would not allow figures who “spread hate and division.”
Israel’s opposition leader Yair Lapid condemned Netanyahu’s remarks as a political “gift” to Albanese, while Australia defended its recognition of Palestine alongside the UK, France and Canada.
For once, Albanese has followed the proper path of morality, and ethical observation.
