Venezuelan opposition figure and Nobel ‘Peace Prize’ winner Maria Corina Machado has given her Nobel medal to U.S. President Donald Trump, calling it a gesture of recognition following talks at the White House.
Machado told supporters she had presented Trump with the medal after their closed-door meeting, while Trump described the move as a “wonderful gesture of mutual respect” in a post on Truth Social.
The Nobel Committee had announced that while a physical medal can change hands, the Nobel Peace Prize title itself cannot be transferred, shared, or revoked. The White House played down the significance of the meeting, with officials saying it did not signal a change in Trump’s assessment of Machado’s political standing.
Trump has questioned Machado’s level of support inside Venezuela and has instead indicated a willingness to work with the country’s interim government led by Delcy Rodriguez, whom he has also publicly praised.
Machado, who fled Venezuela last year after accusing Nicolas Maduro of illegally retaining power in the 2024 elections, continued her US visit with meetings on Capitol Hill as Washington presses ahead with efforts to assert control over Venezuelan oil assets.
