The Pentagon has begun proceedings to potentially demote Democratic Senator and retired Navy Captain Mark Kelly, a move that could reduce his military pension, after the Defence Department labelled a video he appeared in as “seditious”.
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said Kelly and five other Democratic lawmakers undermined military discipline by urging service members to refuse unlawful orders following U.S. strikes on suspected drug-trafficking vessels.
Kelly, who has 30 days to respond, has condemned the action as outrageous and ‘un-American’, saying it amounts to political intimidation.
The video, released last November, told service members they are legally entitled to refuse illegal orders amid questions over the legality of the strikes.
President Donald Trump has accused the lawmakers involved of seditious behaviour, prompting the administration to open a review of Kelly’s conduct under military law.
