Violence erupted in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday night as protesters targeted an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility following a “No Kings” demonstration earlier in the day.
What began as a large-scale march in downtown Portland escalated into chaos when a mob descended on the ICE field office, launching fireworks, smoke grenades, and rocks at federal officers.
Rioters broke windows, breached the building, and injured at least four officers, according to Homeland Security officials. Authorities declared an unlawful assembly and warned the crowd that force would be used if they interfered with law enforcement or emergency services.
The unrest continued into the evening, with police reporting multiple criminal acts including assault and vandalism.
Officers began making targeted arrests around 8 p.m. after giving multiple dispersal warnings. Federal officials condemned the attacks as a coordinated effort to intimidate law enforcement, especially amid the doxxing of ICE agents whose names and addresses were posted around the city.
The Department of Homeland Security vowed not to be deterred, stating that immigration enforcement efforts would intensify despite the threats. “We won’t sit idly by,” said Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, warning that those who assault federal officers will face full prosecution.
