Prosecutors in Bangladesh have demanded the death penalty for ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over a deadly 2024 crackdown on student protests that toppled her government.
Hasina, now in India, is being tried for crimes against humanity after allegedly ordering police to “use lethal weapons,” resulting in up to 1,400 deaths.
Chief prosecutor Tajul Islam told the court Hasina’s actions were driven by a desire to hold power “permanently.”
The protests began over civil service job quotas but escalated into a mass uprising.
Hasina’s former interior minister and police chief are also on trial, while her Awami League party has been banned ahead of next February’s elections.
