Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted Iran’s senior security official Ali Larijani in an unannounced meeting at the Kremlin on Friday, as tensions between Tehran and Washington continue to rise.
The Kremlin confirmed Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and a close adviser to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, was received in Moscow but provided few details about the discussions. Larijani previously visited Russia following US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites earlier this year.
Iran’s ambassador to Russia later said the talks covered cooperation between the two countries along with broader regional and international developments. The visit comes shortly after the United States imposed sanctions on Larijani, accusing him of involvement in suppressing recent anti-government protests across Iran.
Iranian authorities have described the unrest, which initially stemmed from economic grievances, as being fueled by foreign interference aimed at destabilizing the country. Earlier this month, Putin also spoke by phone with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss the situation.
Meanwhile, tensions between Tehran and Washington remain high. US President Donald Trump has reportedly weighed potential military options against Iran while deploying naval forces to the region in an effort to pressure Tehran over its nuclear program. Reports indicate US military planning remains active, with options under consideration ranging from strikes on security targets to actions intended to increase pressure on Iran’s leadership.
Iran has responded by warning it will defend itself against any attack, while both sides have conducted military exercises in the region.
