Robert F. Kennedy Jr. took aim at Congress for its growing support of a bill to fund the obesity medication Ozempic through Medicare at a cost of $1,500 per month.
Kennedy said over 100 members of Congress are backing the initiative, despite many of them having financial ties to Novo Nordisk, the European manufacturer of Ozempic.
Kennedy highlighted the financial costs of the proposal, noting that if the 74% of Americans classified as obese were prescribed the drug, the annual cost would soar to an estimated $3 trillion.
He said Novo Nordisk, a Danish company, has built its status as Europe’s largest corporation largely on U.S. sales projections for Ozempic.
Kennedy also drew attention to the disparity between Denmark’s approach to obesity treatment and the United States’. While the Danish government recommends dietary changes and exercise to combat obesity, the push in the U.S. has been to expand Ozempic’s use, even recommending it for children as young as six.
Kennedy questioned why Congress appears to be prioritising the interests of Novo Nordisk over American farmers and healthier alternatives. He suggested that, for half the price of Ozempic, the U.S. could provide regeneratively raised organic food and gym memberships for every obese American. He accused Novo Nordisk of exerting a corrupt influence on the medical community, media, and politicians through its substantial funding of research and education.
“Why are members of Congress doing the bidding of this Danish company instead of standing up for American farmers and children?” Kennedy asked.
