Speaking on Fox News’ Hannity, US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. challenged the mainstream narrative that rising autism rates are merely due to better diagnosis.
Citing a peer-reviewed study of 900,000 children in Wisconsin that once found autism in less than 1 in 10,000, Kennedy contrasted that with today’s alarming rate of 1 in 31 nationally—and as high as 1 in 20 in California.
He warned that the increase is not just in numbers, but also in severity, with many children nonverbal, nontoilet trained, and facing significant intellectual disabilities.
Kennedy rejected claims that improved detection explains the surge, instead pointing to scientific literature and a UC Davis investigation that found the rise to be real and unprecedented.
Kennedy emphasised that this crisis is only impacting today’s children—not older generations—which undermines the theory of diagnostic changes.
He called for a comprehensive, agnostic investigation into potential causes, ranging from environmental toxins and food additives to medicines and vaccines.
To find answers, Kennedy is commissioning 15 top research institutions to conduct transparent, replicable studies, with preliminary findings expected in six months. “We’re going to look at everything,” Kennedy said, pledging an open process and a national effort to finally uncover the roots of what he calls a true autism epidemic.
