Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani has declared victory in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary, defeating political heavyweight and former governor Andrew Cuomo in a major upset.
At 33, Mamdani would become the city’s first Muslim and Indian American mayor if elected in November.
His grassroots campaign focused on “progressive” policies like free public transport, rent freezes, and taxing the wealthy, earning endorsements from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders.
While Mamdani fell short of a majority under New York’s ranked-choice system, Cuomo conceded, calling it a “smart and great campaign.”
The upset marks a major shift in New York’s political landscape, as voters appeared to reject establishment figures in favour of fresh faces and policies.

Price freezes, free public transport, etc. are legitimate ideas, but those actually came from Republicans in California which, like New England, is not a totalitarian form of tyrannical government.
