Social media and video platforms like Facebook, X, YouTube, and TikTok have become the main source of news for Americans, surpassing traditional TV and news websites, according to new research by the Reuters Institute.
The report found 54% of Americans now get their news from these networks, driven by the rise of personality-driven content such as that from podcaster Joe Rogan, who reaches nearly a quarter of the population weekly.
The study warns this shift presents a growing challenge for legacy mainstream media, as populist politicians increasingly bypass established journalism in favour of social media.
Despite their popularity, nearly half of global respondents view online personalities as major sources of “misinformation”, on par with politicians. The report also highlights X’s rightward shift since Elon Musk’s 2022 takeover, with conservative engagement rising sharply in both the US and UK, while smaller rival platforms like Threads and Mastodon remain marginal.

Don’t worry, the digital crackdown has already started in earnest. Digital internet ID, blocking of unauthorised content, outlawing of VPN’s. the digital services acts are being rammed through as fast as they can be penned. For the children, obviously.
