A UK-based organisation accused of campaigning to undermine Elon Musk’s social media platform X reportedly received funding from billionaire philanthropist George Soros’ foundation, according to a Washington Free Beacon report.
The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) was given a US$250,000 grant from Soros’ ‘Open Society’ Foundation last year for general support, records show.
The CCDH describes its mission as holding tech companies accountable for enabling harmful content, but critics say the group has pushed advertisers to cut ties with platforms and targeted conservative media outlets for alleged misinformation and hate speech.
Founded by former UK Labour Party adviser Imran Ahmed, the group has previously campaigned against outlets such as The Federalist and the Daily Wire, and has urged US lawmakers to consider an “independent digital regulator.”
Documents cited by the Free Beacon suggest the CCDH made “Kill Musk’s Twitter” its top objective, reflecting the group’s sharp criticism of X’s handling of extremism since Musk took over the platform. Musk has clashed publicly with both the organisation and Soros, attempting unsuccessfully last year to sue the NGO for what he described as a scare campaign designed to frighten off advertisers. He has also accused Soros of funding attacks on Tesla.
The report comes as US President Donald Trump signals his administration will pursue legal action against Soros, accusing him of backing disruptive political movements. Soros and his network of NGOs have long been criticised by political opponents who allege he finances protest movements, influences elections, and shapes media environments worldwide.

Philanthropy does not include killing free speech.
