South Africa says it was removed from the guest list for June’s G7 summit in France after alleged pressure from the United States, though Paris has rejected claims it bowed to Washington.
Officials in Pretoria said President Cyril Ramaphosa had initially been invited to attend the gathering, which will be hosted by France, but the invitation was later withdrawn.
A presidential spokesperson claimed the US threatened to boycott the summit if South Africa participated, an assertion French officials deny, saying the decision was part of a move to streamline attendance and instead invite Kenya.
The dispute comes amid worsening ties between United States and South Africa since Donald Trump returned to office, with disagreements over foreign policy positions and Pretoria’s stance on global conflicts.
While a White House official denied any role in the G7 decision, Ramaphosa said the exclusion was not unexpected, noting South Africa is not a member of the group and that many countries are not invited to attend.
