UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has been handed a political lifeline after a More in Common poll showed the Conservatives overtaking Reform UK for the first time in 18 months, with the three main parties now within the margin of error.
Labour sat on 26%, while the Tories were on 23% and Reform 22%. One of Burnham’s first acts as leader was to scrap Sir Keir Starmer’s national digital ID scheme, redirecting resources to the cost of living.
However, the move did not dismantle the UK’s wider digital verification infrastructure, with mandatory right-to-work checks remaining and digital driving licences still planned for later this year.
Burnham has also pledged deeper devolution and greater public control of essential services.
