Trump accused of violating U. S. Constitution with Iran strikes

President Donald Trump is facing backlash from Democrats after authorising strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities without Congressional approval, with critics accusing him of violating the U.S. Constitution.

Democrats, including Senators Bernie Sanders and Christopher Van Hollen Jr., condemned the attacks as “unconstitutional” and warned Trump is dragging the US into another Middle East war.

The strikes, which Trump praised as a “spectacular military success,” have also alienated parts of his own MAGA base, who oppose US involvement in foreign wars and demand focus on domestic issues. Legal experts argue the action constitutes a declaration of war, which requires Congressional consent.

While the president can act in emergencies, critics point out that Iran’s facilities posed no imminent threat and the US intelligence community had confirmed Iran was not building a nuclear weapon.

Lawmakers have previously tried to limit Trump’s war-making powers under the War Powers Resolution, but with Republican control of Congress, their ability to block or overturn Trump’s actions is limited.

Trump has not offered a legal justification, though he may invoke post-9/11 authorisations used to justify past military actions.
