U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered all federal agencies to “IMMEDIATELY CEASE all use of Anthropic’s technology” after the AI firm refused the Pentagon’s demand for unconditional military access to its Claude models, escalating a high-stakes clash over the use of artificial intelligence in defence.
In a Truth Social post, Trump declared, “We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and will not do business with them again,” announcing a six-month phase-out and warning that Anthropic must “get their act together… or I will use the Full Power of the Presidency.”
The Pentagon had threatened action under the Defence Production Act and to label the company a supply chain risk, while Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said that “effective immediately, no contractor, supplier or partner that does business with the United States military may conduct any commercial activity with Anthropic,” accusing the company of delivering “a master class in arrogance and betrayal.”
Anthropic has argued its systems should not be used for domestic mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons, a stance that has drawn support from AI employees across rival firms, even as critics warn the administration’s move could set a “dangerous precedent” for government pressure on private technology companies.
