Ukraine remains ‘committed’ to pursuing peace talks involving Russia before the end of this year, according to Ukraine’s ambassador to Türkiye, Vasily Bodnar.
While Kiev recently cancelled a planned “peace summit” for November, in favour of smaller conferences with its Western backers, Bodnar emphasised that Ukraine still seeks peace negotiations—though not in a “direct format” with Russia.
Speaking at a briefing in Ankara, he clarified that the goal is to achieve a “fair peace” through discussions led by the international community alongside Ukraine, with third-party mediation, rather than a bilateral meeting between Ukraine and Russia.
Bodnar explained that the proposed summit would involve creating a list of steps towards peace, which would then be presented to Russia indirectly.
Türkiye, known for its neutral stance and previous mediation efforts in the conflict, is expected to play a significant role in facilitating the talks.
Despite multiple offers from various countries to mediate, peace discussions have stalled, with Kiev continuing to push President Zelensky’s “peace formula” and Russia dismissing it as “delusional”.
Moscow has instead proposed terms for a ceasefire that include territorial concessions and security guarantees from Ukraine.
