An escalator carrying Donald and Melania Trump at the UN in New York abruptly stopped after its safety mechanism was likely triggered by a videographer filming backwards, UN officials said.

The White House initially suggested deliberate interference, but UN bureaucrats said the incident was accidental, caused at the top of the escalator.

Trump joked about the mishap in his General Assembly speech, where he also faced teleprompter issues, quipping that the operator was “in big trouble.” A UN spokesperson later claimed the White House controlled the teleprompter system during his address.
