The US Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation into writer E. Jean Carroll over claims she may have lied under oath during civil lawsuits against US President Donald Trump.
The inquiry is focused on whether Carroll falsely stated in a 2022 deposition that she had not received outside financial backing for her legal action, despite later revelations that LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman helped fund some of her legal costs.
Carroll previously won two civil cases against Trump, with juries finding him liable for sexual assault and defamation, resulting in damages exceeding US$88 million, although Trump continues to deny the allegations and is seeking to overturn the rulings through the courts.
