Former British soldier and Afghanistan veteran Rob Homans, 35, who felt abandoned by the housing system despite his service, took his own life in August after leaving his medals with a friend.
His mother Dawn Turner has launched “Rob’s Army” to campaign for justice and reforms to veteran support, saying her son was denied housing priority and adequate mental health care.
Homans, who served two tours in Afghanistan, struggled with physical and psychological injuries after discharge and was offered unsuitable accommodation far from his support network. He had told his mother, “I fought for this country and it means nothing,” before his death.
Turner is calling for an independent Office for Veterans’ Affairs to ensure accountability and proper care for ex-service members.
Meanwhile Afghanis who entered the UK illegally get put up at taxpayers expense in 4 star hotels and provided with meals, mobile phone, health care and pocket money.
All this bullshit, especially in the USA about “thanking people for their service” and then blithely dumping them on the street. Lazy weasel words and little more. I hope too, people understand that these governments view them as cannon fodder. Don’t join up. Instead, get a real job with longevity, one that wont leave you damaged physically and/or emotionally. If these dirty politicians want a war, let them fight it. Scum.
Sure, but if people are impoverished you get many young men enlisting to have some sort of income.
You clearly could have made this article shorter. Shame on you. BTW … if you are confused, that was sarcasm.
