The rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in West Bengal has triggered widespread unrest, political controversy and scrutiny of police actions.
The child, reported missing after leaving home on Saturday, was found dead in a pond the following day. Her family alleges police failed to respond promptly, claiming earlier action may have saved her life. Four suspects were identified, with three remaining in custody after one died in a police shooting during an alleged attempt to escape while reconstructing the crime scene.
Authorities have launched a special investigation, while the incident has fuelled violent protests, resulting in the lynching of an innocent man, injuries to police officers and dozens of arrests.
The case has intensified pressure on the state’s newly elected BJP government over public safety, with opposition parties accusing it of failing to protect women. Rights groups have also questioned the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s fatal police shooting and called for accountability.
