A 30-year-old woman was seriously injured after being bitten by a shark while swimming at Coogee Beach in Sydney on Saturday morning.

Members of the public pulled her from the water and provided first aid before she was airlifted to hospital with severe injuries to her arms and legs that are expected to require multiple surgeries.

Authorities closed Coogee Beach and other beaches in the Randwick Council area for 24 hours while safety assessments are carried out.

The incident follows a series of recent shark attacks around Australia, including three fatal attacks in Western Australia and Queensland in recent weeks.

Australia records about 20 shark attacks annually, with most occurring along the country’s east and south-east coastlines.
