Jacqui Grant ONZM is a former member of the Human Rights Review Tribunal.
Grant’s storied life began in Australia where she grew up in a time when being trans or gay was illegal. Moving later to New Zealand she carved out a record of achievement and service to the community which saw her being appointed as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1998 then later as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2018.
Grant told Chris Lynch Media that Shaneel Lal was ‘dividing the community and is an opportunistic narcissist.’
She told Lynch that Lal’s ‘self-promoting victim card was an insult to the social progress that had been made, and Lal’s framing of trans issues, including playing off white trans people with coloured trans people, was “offensive and just plain wrong.”’
Trans activist Shaneel Lal, a columnist for state-subsidised foreign-owned media outlet NZHerald was awarded the ‘Young New Zealander of the Year 2023’ prize this week. The decision led to a backlash with commentators and members of the public claiming Lal was responsible for inciting violence against women at a #LetWomanSpeak event in Auckland recently.
