Police updates on crimes and investigations for 9 June 2023.

Fatal crash, Ellerslie

One person has died following a fatal crash in Ellerslie this morning.

Police responded to the crash, on Great South Road, just before 7am.

Sadly one person received critical injuries and has since died.

The Serous Crash Unit is in attendance and enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are underway.

Update: Missing Taupo man found deceased.

Taupō Police are appealing for assistance from the public to locate 49-year-old Michael James Hill.

Mr Hill was last seen on Wairakei Drive at about 11.30pm last night (8 June). He was walking north towards the intersection of State Highway 1 and State Highway 5.

Police’s enquiries have established there were two people walking near Mr Hill at the time. These witnesses had previously been in the Wairakei BP service station.

‘While we don’t believe these people were involved, they may have information that can assist with our enquiries so we would like to speak with them,’ said Senior Sergeant Andy Livingstone.

‘Mr Hill was wearing a grey hoodie, green bush-style pants, a black watch and blue shoes.

‘Police and Michael’s family have concerns for his welfare.’

Anyone who has information on Michael’s whereabouts or who may have given him a ride is urged to contact Police on 105 refencing event number P054932556.

Arrest following fleeing driver incident, Christchurch

A 28-year-old man has been arrested after a fleeing driver incident in Mairehau, Christchurch this morning.

Shortly before 9am Police signalled for a vehicle to stop on Cranford Street, due to its manner of driving. The driver fled and Police did not initiate a pursuit, and instead maintained observations of the vehicle.

Shortly afterwards the offending vehicle crashed into a member of the public’s vehicle on Nancy Road, Mairehau. The member of the public received serious injuries and was transported to Christchurch Hospital.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene, they had sustained minor injuries. A firearm in the vehicle was seized. Charges are forthcoming.

The road was closed while Serious Crash Unit conducted a scene examination. Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

Serious crash involving a Police vehicle, central Auckland

Two Police staff have been injured in crash in central Auckland this afternoon, while they were responding to an incident.

The crash occurred at around 3.20pm at the intersection of Beach Road and Tangihua Street.

The Police vehicle entered the intersection at low speed, under lights and sirens, when the collision with a bus occurred.

One officer is being taken to Auckland City Hospital with serious injuries, however these are not currently thought to be life threatening.

A second officer has also been taken to hospital with moderate injuries.

Occupants onboard the bus at the time were also being assessed at the scene. At least one was being transported to hospital with minor injuries.

‘I would like to acknowledge the members of the public who immediately came to our officers’ aid and assisted at the scene,’ said Greg Brand, Auckland City Road Policing Manager.

‘Police will be ensuring welfare is put in place for our two members involved in this incident.

‘The Serious Crash Unit are in attendance at the scene and an investigation will commence in due course into the crash.’
