Trans female player Ash Davis was confronted by David Menzies of Rebel News Canada.
A recent match between Fergus Highlanders and Burlington in Ontario was the scene for the latest development in the Davis controversy, which began last month when independent media first reported about the man playing women’s rugby. Back then Davis was said to have injured three female player’s in a game.
Diana Murphy, a friend of some of the injured players, tweeted: ‘Three women’s rugby players had to be removed from a game and treated for injuries from hits sustained by a transwoman. Trans have no place in women’s sports.’
One of the injured players is reported to have said, ‘I had never been hit like that before, even at the competitive women’s level. There was so much more brute force. There are women who are bigger than him, but no girl hits like that. This is a strong human.’
World Rugby guidelines state ‘transgender women currently may not play women’s rugby.’
The guidelines also set out the reason for the prohibition:
‘Because of the size, force- and power-producing advantages conferred by testosterone during puberty and adolescence, and the resultant player welfare risks this creates.’
Despite the guideline, national governing body Rugby Canada allows trans women to play because it is a ‘Federal inclusion issue’, prompting Menzies to state, ‘Justin Trudeau’s mindset trumps the rules and regulations of World Rugby.’
Davis was not willing to talk when confronted by Menzies during a break in the play. Team mates and supporters gathered to protect the controversial player, including a woman who claimed Davis was ‘her wife’.
