Former Deputy Prime Minister Paula Bennett is contemplating a run for the Auckland mayoralty in the next year’s election.
Having retired from the political arena in 2020 to take up a role at Bayleys Real Estate, Bennett has kept a low profile but is now hinted to be considering a return to public service in the form of the Auckland mayoralty, according to a report this morning in state-subsidised news outlet NZ Herald.
While coy herself, insiders suggest her candidacy is likely.
Bennett has publicly criticised current Mayor Wayne Brown’s leadership style, especially his approach to public servants, in her column for the Herald on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson, another figure with strong National Party ties, is also under speculation for a mayoral bid, though she remains non-committal at this stage.
Former high profile mayoral candidate Leo Molloy has thrown his support behind Bennett.

Let us hope the voters recall this woman’s dreadful record as Minister of Social Development (2008 to 2014), Minister of Youth Affairs (2008–2013), Minister for Disability Issues (2008–2009), Associate Minister of Housing (2013–14). Minister of State Services (2014–2017), Minister of Social Housing (2014–2016), Associate Minister of Finance (2014–2016), Minister of Local Government (2014–2015) and Minister for Climate Change Issues (2015–2017) Minister for Women, Minister of Police, and Minister of Tourism (2016–2017).
Like Ardern, she left everything in ashes when she scuttled away, fully aware of how hated she had become.
