The probe into allegations against Green Party MP Darleen Tana, who was suspended over claims of exploiting migrants through her husband’s e-bike business, has incurred expenses of $43,000 to date.
Tana, a list MP, was temporarily removed from her duties on March 14 following the emergence of these accusations. The funding for this investigation is drawn from the budget of the Green Party leaders’ office, a sum provided by the Parliamentary Service and ultimately financed by taxpayers.
A spokesperson told media that, “The Green Party is committed to ensuring natural justice, which is why we are conducting a thorough, independent inquiry into the serious accusations involving Darleen Tana. The cost of this investigation currently stands at $43,000.”
While the investigation continues, Tana has remained absent from Parliament for half of the session’s days this year, yet she still receives her full salary.
Chloe Swarbrick, co-leader of the Greens was “hopeful for a swift resolution.”
Led by barrister Rachel Burt, the investigation has been underway for nine weeks without a final report. The Green Party’s leadership has not imposed a deadline for its completion.
