Nelson woman waited 19 months for specialist call amid endometriosis agony

Aleisha Hosie from Nelson endured 19 months of severe pain caused by undiagnosed endometriosis, during which her ovaries, uterus, and bowel became fused by scar tissue.

She described to state-funded media that after waiting months without a specialist appointment from Nelson Hospital, despite being told she’d be seen within two months, she was forced to seek private care, with her family contributing $500.

She eventually paid out-of-pocket for a hysterectomy, which revealed the extent of her condition—something never detected through the public health system.

She finally received a call from the hospital nearly two years later, just for an initial appointment.

Her case highlights the wider crisis at Nelson Hospital, where hundreds face excessive delays, prompting Health NZ to send in a crisis team and issue an apology while working to improve wait times.

  1. This could be another aspect of the separatist health system that Labour tried to install: a Free to Maori system funded by the NZ taxpayer, who was eventually left with a dysfunctional, or no public healthcare system, and forced to buy health insurance. That didn’t happen, but what would healthcare insurance eventually buy when most of our medics are leaving because of working conditions?

  2. Those apologies are wearing thin, by now. NZ’s healthcare system is a train wreck. I’ve been on the sharp end of the spear, so to speak and its one of the key reasons, we are planning to leave. Its disgusting too, given the amount of tax paid out here. There is no excuse whatsoever, for this. Fools voting Liebour and National Disgrace, need a swift kick in the proverbial.

  4. At some point the typical dim indoctrinated work-a-day NZ tax-payer will start to question why they are paying their taxes for non-existent government services.

We’re not there yet, but it’s fairly close.

  5. I lived in excruciating pain 24/7 for FIVE YEARS because NZ medical personnel didn’t diagnose the severe adhesions which filled my entire abdominal torso for 18 years even attaching to my diaphram ! Everything was stuck together from my pelvic floor including core muscles and psoas muscles which let you lift your legs.
I couldn’t walk. Didn’t know i also had PCOS which just felt like a few days each month the pain i lived with was even worse !! … DRs in 3 locations in NZ told me it was all in my head !!! Nothing wrong with me …THEIR NEGLIGENCE almost cost me my life. I was so close to death by the time i got to two Dr’s in Sydney who SAVED MY LIFE.
At GREAT cost to me i might add !!!
I am hoping to go back to Sydney and have new adhesions removed by same surgeon (20 years ago) as I have NO FAITH in any NZ medical personnel at all. I will have to pay for it.

I now believe NZ DR’s are PROTECTED by ACC as we can not sue for medical negligence. AND there is plenty of it.
I was told i had a great case for ACC bulk settlement HOWEVER that did not eventuate as they found my NZ medical records were DESTROYED in 2003. I started collapsing in 2000.
They obviously didn’t try much to find me when original hospital was demolished. They also had my parents address but they never contacted them either. Just destroyed my file !!
The adhesions were due to a swab being left inside me at Hysterectomy age 30. It abcessed and then exploded. I almost died then too.
I was too unwell to fight the system … had to focus upon getting well. It has taken all these years and i find damage is permanent in some aspects.

I have endured 4 medical misadventures in NZ system and have paid out huge / unbelievable amounts of money to restore my body to as healthy as i can be BUT my entire adult life has been so compromised by all this.
It really pisses me off when i read this stuff is still happening. I truly feel for this woman.
